Oceus Announces Two New Division Leaders

(RESTON, Va.) — In alignment with accelerated growth, Oceus is reorganizing around two operational divisions: Oceus Federal Civilian and Industries Division (“FedCiv and Industries”) and Oceus DoD and Intel Division.

Oceus is pleased to announce the addition of Bart Gray to their team as Senior Vice President and General Manager for the FedCiv and Industries Division. Bart brings a wealth of experience in taking new technologies to market with prior positions at Parsons Corporation, SimSpace and 3M. “We see commercial private networks as a significant growth market and are excited to have Bart, with his broad technical experience from start-up to large, complex conglomerate, lead this dynamic business unit,” said Brad Antle, Executive Chairman of Oceus.

Steve McCutchen has been promoted to Senior Vice President and General Manager and will lead the DoD and Intel Division. In this role, Steve will continue to shape the DoD strategy and go-to-market initiatives for Oceus. Steve brings a long heritage and deep understanding of applying leading broadband capabilities to the DoD and for other government customers.

In this expansion, Oceus will leverage Oceus Plano Labs, an innovation and integration facility that is responsible for 35 patents, for both market domains. Jeff Harman, President for Oceus, states, “The synergies between the two markets have never been this closely aligned, and we see a clear discriminator in what Plano Labs can offer to both verticals.”

The distributed architectures Oceus excels in providing have been critical in the DoD environment and are now a critical requirement in the commercial sector as well. “New network architectures that can quickly adapt to changing requirements, include compute at the edge, have extremely low latency, and are able to operate in less-than-ideal conditions have applicability to both markets,” said Kevin Stiles, CTO for Oceus.

Oceus Awarded 5G Contract

Mobile Communications Innovator to Build 5G Test Systems to be Used by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (OUSD) Research & Engineering (R&E)

(RESTON, Va.) — Oceus is pleased to announce they have been awarded a 5G Cell on Light Truck (CoLT) subcontract from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), which will be used to support research and development for OUSD(R&E). The initial order is for $21 million with options to provide a total of $32 million in equipment and services.

Under the subcontract, Oceus, along with key partner Ericsson, will build 5G test systems for 5G applications. As part of the project, Oceus will deploy Ericsson’s Release 15 3GPP standards-based 5G Core cloud native software enabling standalone 5G, along with 5G New Radio (NR) hardware and software, which fulfill mission-critical grade service requirements. Each system will have specified frequency bands to test the full spectrum in 5G implementations.

Oceus’ Executive Chairman Brad Antle states: “We are excited to bring world-class 5G solutions to the U.S. government.” Jeff Harman, President of Oceus, adds: “This award builds on our legacy of providing the best-in-class mobile communication platforms to extend communications to the tactical edge.”

Oceus’ initial delivery for the project will be seven CoLTs configured to test a variety of 5G use cases. Engineering and design for the systems will be conducted out of Oceus’ Plano Lab facilities. The Plano Labs facility specializes in configurations of 5G systems in several form factors and will lead this deliverable.  Each CoLT is uniquely configured to test the various bands of spectrum from FR1 to FR2 frequency ranges.  Oceus will provide training on how to operate the systems along with providing field support and warranty to sustain the systems.

Xiphos Utilized in 60-Vehicle Drone Swarm

Oceus’ Xiphos™ private broadband network was utilized in BBN’s successful 60-vehicle swarm. The competition was part of a DARPA OFFSET field experiment with BBN’s Command and Control of Aggregate Swarm Tactics (CCAST) drone swarm framework.

Each of the UxVs used machine-to-machine (M2M) communications for direction and avoidance. This is an example of how private networking using assigned frequencies can outperform traditional listen-before-talk networks, such as Wi-Fi.
